Participant funding for Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ application to renew its decommissioning licence for Whiteshell Laboratories

Participant funding notice

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) will conduct a public hearing to consider an application from Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) to renew its nuclear research and test establishment decommissioning licence for Whiteshell Laboratories for a period of 8 years.The Whiteshell Laboratories site is located in the municipality of Pinawa, Manitoba, Treaty 1 and Treaty 3 territories, the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, Cree, Anisininew, and Dakota Peoples, and the Homeland of the Red River Métis. The Whiteshell site is also located in the vicinity of Treaty 5 territory.

The CNSC is offering participant funding to assist Indigenous Nations and communities, members of the public and interested parties in reviewing CNL’s application and associated documents, and in participating in the Commission hearing process.

Up to $200,000 will be disbursed among all successful applicants for the provision of new, distinctive and valuable information through informed and topic-specific interventions to the Commission. Participant funding applications must clearly demonstrate how the proposed intervention will provide the Commission with information directly related to CNL’s application to renew its nuclear research and test establishment decommissioning licence for Whiteshell Laboratories.

The deadline to submit a participant funding application is November 20, 2026.

A funding review committee, independent of the CNSC, will consider all applications for funding and make recommendations on the allocation of funds.
