Participant funding for the Saskatchewan Research Council’s application to renew its licence for the Gunnar historic uranium mine and mill site

Participant funding notice
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) will conduct a hearing based on written submissions in March 2026 to consider an application from the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) to renew its licence for the Gunnar historic uranium mine and mill site. SRC is requesting that its licence be renewed for a period of 5 years to complete the remaining remediation work to transition the site to safe long-term monitoring.
The Gunnar mine is located in northern Saskatchewan, on Treaty 8 territory, and the Homeland of the Métis, and is wit the traditional territories of the Denesųłiné, Cree, and Métis.
The CNSC is offering participant funding to assist Indigenous Nations and communities, members of the public and interested parties in:
- reviewing documentation, including CNSC staff’s and SRC’s Commission member documents
- participating in the Commission hearing, where applicants will be given the opportunity to provide new, distinctive and valuable information through informed and topic-specific interventions in writing to the Commission
Up to $50,000 in participant funding will be disbursed among all successful applicants.
Applying for funding
The deadline to submit a participant funding application is September 26, 2025.
A funding review committee, independent of the CNSC, will consider all applications for funding and make recommendations on the allocation of funds.
