Participant Funding Program decision – Hydro Québec’s application to renew its Gentilly-2 power reactor decommissioning licence
This participant funding opportunity is now closed, and funding has been approved.
Background
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) previously announced that it was offering up to $75,000 in participant funding to assist Indigenous Nations and communities, members of the public and interested parties in reviewing the application and associated documents from Hydro-Québec to renew its power reactor decommissioning licence for the Gentilly-2 facility, and in participating in the Commission hearing process by providing topic-specific interventions in writing to the Commission.
Hydro-Québec has applied to renew its licence for a period of 20 years to continue decommissioning activities and the operation of the waste management facilities at Gentilly-2. In addition to the renewal application, Hydro-Québec has proposed a financial guarantee for decommissioning to be accepted by the Commission. The CNSC acknowledges that the Gentilly-2 facility is located on the traditional and unceded territory of the Abenaki people under the council of the W8banaki, and the traditional land of the Wendat.
CNSC participant funding decision
A funding review committee (FRC), independent of the CNSC, was established to review the funding applications received by the CNSC’s Participant Funding Program (PFP) administrator and to make recommendations on the allocation of up to $75,000 to eligible applicants.
The CNSC carefully considered the FRC’s recommendations on the allocation of participant funding and approved the reimbursement of up to $49,050 to the following recipients:
| Applicant | CNSC approved funding |
|---|---|
| 1. Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility | $15,000 |
| 2. Jocelyn Simon Daigle | $1,500 |
| 3. Opal Roszell | $17,250 |
| 4. Regroupement des organismes environnementaux en énergie | $15,300 |
| Total | $49,050 |
