Participant funding for Ontario Power Generation’s application to renew its licence for the Western Waste Management Facility

Status

This participant funding opportunity is open from March 25 to May 19, 2026.

Participant funding notice

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) will conduct a public hearing to consider an application from Ontario Power Generation Inc. (OPG) to renew its waste facility operating licence for the Western Waste Management Facility (WWMF) for a period of 10 years. OPG has also applied for authorization to construct 2 additional used-fuel storage structures at the WWMF. The WWMF is located in the Municipality of Kincardine, Ontario, within the traditional and treaty territory of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, and the harvesting areas of the Georgian Bay Métis Nation of Ontario Region 7 and the Historic Saugeen Métis peoples.

The CNSC is offering participant funding to assist Indigenous Nations and communities, members of the public and interested parties in reviewing OPG’s application and associated documents, and in participating in the Commission hearing process.

Up to $200,000 in participant funding will be disbursed among all successful applicants for the provision of new, distinctive and valuable information through informed and topic-specific interventions to the Commission. Participant funding applications must clearly demonstrate how the proposed intervention will provide the Commission with information directly related to OPG’s application to renew its licence for the WWMF.
