Participant Funding Program decision – Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation review of Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ application to amend the Gentilly-1 waste facility licence

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) offered funding through its Participant Funding Program (PFP) to assist Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation (AOPFN) in meeting with CNSC staff and in reviewing and submitting comments in writing to the Commission on the application from Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) to amend the Gentilly-1 waste facility licence.

The information gathered from the meeting(s) and these activities will be included in the relevant Commission member document to bring valuable information directly to the Commission.

Background

The CNSC makes participant funding available to:

  • enhance Indigenous and public participation in the CNSC’s environmental assessment and licensing processes
  • help Indigenous Nations and communities, members of the public and interested parties bring valuable information to the Commission

A funding review committee (FRC) was established to review the AOPFN funding application received by the CNSC’s PFP administrator and to make recommendations on the allocation of funding to this applicant.

On February 17, 2026, the FRC reviewed the AOPFN application received by the CNSC.

CNSC participant funding decision

The CNSC has carefully considered the recommendations of the FRC on the allocation of participant funding for AOPFN’s review of CNL’s application to amend the Gentilly-1 waste facility licence.

The CNSC will award funding to the recipient as listed below.

Recipient CNSC-approved funding
Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation $7,095.50
