Participant Funding Program decision – Saskatchewan Research Council’s application to renew its licence for the Gunnar historic uranium mine and mill site

This participant funding opportunity is now closed, and funding has been approved.

Background

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) previously announced that it was offering up to $50,000 in participant funding to assist Indigenous Nations and communities, members of the public and interested parties in reviewing the application, and associated documents, from the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) to renew its licence for the Gunnar historic uranium mine and mill site, and in participating in the Commission hearing process by providing topic-specific interventions in writing to the Commission.

SRC is requesting that its licence be renewed for a period of 5 years to complete the remaining remediation work to transition the site to safe long-term monitoring. The Gunnar mine is located in northern Saskatchewan, on Treaty 8 territory, and the Homeland of the Métis, and is within the traditional territories of the Denesųłiné, Cree, and Métis.

CNSC participant funding decision

A funding review committee (FRC), independent of the CNSC, was established to review the funding applications received by the CNSC’s Participant Funding Program (PFP) administrator and to make recommendations on the allocation of funding. The FRC was given the flexibility to recommend funding beyond $50,000 based on the value-added nature of the funding applications received.

The CNSC carefully considered the FRC’s recommendations on the allocation of participant funding and approved the reimbursement of up to $63,394.40 to the following recipients:

Applicant CNSC approved funding
1. Radiation Safety Institute of Canada $12,000
2. Ya’thi Néné Land and Resource Office $36,080
3. Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation $15,314.40
Total $63,394.40
