Participant Funding Program decision – Ontario Power Generation’s application to refurbish the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station and renew its Pickering Nuclear Generating Station and Waste Management Facility licences
This participant funding opportunity is now closed, and funding has been approved.
Background
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) previously announced that it was offering up to $250,000 in participant funding to assist Indigenous Nations and communities, members of the public and interested parties in reviewing the application, and associated documents, from Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to authorize the refurbishment of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station (PNGS) and renew the power reactor operating licence for the PNGS and the waste facility operating licence for the Pickering Waste Management Facility, and in participating in the Commission hearing process.
Both facilities are located at the Pickering nuclear site, in Pickering, Ontario, on the traditional lands and waters of the Michi Saagiig Anishinaabeg, the Gunshot Treaty (1877–88), the Williams Treaties (1923), and the Williams Treaties Settlement Agreement (2018).
CNSC participant funding decision
A funding review committee (FRC), independent of the CNSC, was established to review the funding applications received by the CNSC’s Participant Funding Program (PFP) administrator and to make recommendations on the allocation of funding to eligible applicants. The FRC was given the flexibility to recommend funding beyond $250,000 based on the value-added nature of the funding applications received.
The CNSC carefully considered the FRC’s recommendations on the allocation of participant funding and approved the reimbursement of up to $343,584.86 to the following recipients:

| 1. Alderville First Nation | $57,788.36 |
