SMR facilities

As interest in small modular reactors (SMRs) grows, the CNSC continues to share information on SMR technologies that are being considered in Canada, and regulatory activities surrounding them.

SMR planning and project development is advancing in several Canadian provinces. These are the proposed projects that are either being reviewed by the CNSC or are anticipated in the future:

Global First Power

Global First Power is proposing an SMR project at a location within Chalk River Laboratories in Ontario.

NB Power’s ARC-100 Project

NB Power’s proposed SMR project for the ARC-100 is located in New Brunswick, adjacent to the existing CANDU unit at the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station.

OPG’s Darlington New Nuclear Project

Ontario Power Generation Inc.’s proposed Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP) is an SMR project using GE Hitachi BWRX-300 technology. The DNNP is adjacent to the existing Darlington Nuclear Generating Station, in Clarington, Ontario.

SaskPower’s proposed SMR project

SaskPower has selected the GE Hitachi BWRX-300 as a potential design for the proposed development of nuclear power from SMRs. This project is in the early planning phase and no licence applications have been received.
