Regulatory oversight and monitoring
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) reports regularly on areas under its oversight, providing information on the safety performance of licensees who are authorized to use nuclear substances and prescribed equipment in Canada.
The CNSC evaluates licensees on their safety programs and adherence to regulatory expectations. Key issues and emerging changes in regulation are also highlighted.
A wealth of information and data on licensee performance, categorized by sector, is available:
- Nuclear power generating sites (including waste management facilities)
- Uranium mines and mills
- Use of nuclear substances
- Uranium and nuclear substance processing facilities
- Particle accelerator facilities
- Canadian Nuclear Laboratories
Compliance verification
One of the CNSC’s core responsibilities is ensuring compliance with legislation, regulations and licensing requirements. Through its compliance verification and enforcement activities, the CNSC is able to assure Canadians that licensees continue to operate safely and in line with requirements.
The CNSC verifies licensee compliance through:
- regular site inspections and evaluations
- assessments and reviews operational activities and licensee documentation
- examinations of routine performance data that licensees must report
- reviews of unusual occurrences
- investigations of unplanned events or accidents involving nuclear substances
- collections of samples, which it analyzes in its laboratory
