Verena Sesin

Professional biography

Verena is an environmental risk assessment specialist at the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). A CNSC staff member since 2022, Verena conducts technical assessments and provides evidence-based advice for environmental risk assessments, impact assessments and licensing matters. She also manages research projects and supports national and international program activities related to environmental protection.

Expertise and education

She holds a PhD in environmental and life sciences from Trent University, a master’s degree in ecotoxicology and a bachelor’s degree in science journalism. Through her academic research and training, Verena has gained expertise in ecological risk assessment, aquatic and terrestrial plant biology, biodiversity conservation and science communication.

Roles and responsibilities

In her role, Verena reviews and assesses environmental risks of nuclear facilities, in accordance with regulatory requirements and guidance. As a subject-matter expert for the terrestrial environment, she verifies that technical assessments are robust and that adequate mitigation measures and monitoring programs are in place. Verena also conducts atmospheric dispersion modelling in support of the CNSC’s Emergency Operations Centre. This work contributes to protecting the environment and the health of all people in Canada.

Other highlights

Internationally, Verena serves on the steering committee of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry’s Global Plants Interest Group, an expert group that addresses emerging issues in plant ecotoxicology and risk assessment. She also manages Canada’s participation in the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Radiation Protection Computer Code Analysis and Maintenance Program.

At the CNSC, Verena is co-chair of the Diverse Employees Network, helping advance an inclusive workplace where all employees feel respected, valued and supported.
