CNSC Participant Funding Program decision – Meeting with Williams Treaties First Nations regarding regulated facilities and activities in Williams Treaties' Traditional Territory

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) offeredfunding under its Participant Funding Program (PFP) to facilitate ameeting on June 6, 2019 in Ottawa, Ontario, between Williams Treaties FirstNations (WTFN) and CNSC staff in order todiscuss CNSC-regulated facilities and activities in WTFN’s traditionalterritory.

The information gathered from the meeting will be included in the relevantCommission member document in order to bring any value-added informationdirectly to the Commission.

Background

PFP support for CNSC meetings on matters of regulatory interest was madeavailable by the CNSC to:

  • enhance Indigenous andstakeholder participation in the CNSC’s environmental assessment and licensingprocesses
  • help Indigenous peoples, thepublic and stakeholders bring valuable information to the Commission

A funding review committee (FRC), independent from the CNSC, wasestablished to review the funding application received by the CNSC’s PFPAdministrator and to make recommendations on the allocation of funding to theapplicant.

The FRC member was Bruce Young, retired Canadian Environmental AssessmentAgency director.     

The CNSC received one PFP application requesting $765.53, and this wasreviewed by the FRC.

CNSC participant funding decision

The CNSC carefully considered the FRC’srecommendation on the allocation of participant funding for WTFN to meet withCNSC staff and approved the reimbursement of up to $765.53.
