Roles and responsibilities

Lindsay Beaton is a research scientist at the Consumer and Clinical Radiation Protection Bureau (CCRPB) at Health Canada (HC). Her research focuses on the biological effects of ionizing radiation. More specifically, she has been studying biomarkers of radiation sensitivity, developing triage assays for large population exposures and examining the impact of radiation on astronauts during long-term space travel. She is CCRPB’s lead risk assessor, participating in the HC Task Force on Scientific Risk Assessment, leading the Information Sharing Mechanism working group and developing the risk assessment framework for radiation-emitting devices.

Lindsay is passionate about mentoring students and is a member of the Carleton University Alumni Mentoring Program. She is also a member of the CCRPB/RPB Diversity and Inclusivity Working Group.

Current research and/or projects

  • Developing, updating and validating biodosimetry methods on new or updated technologies
  • Developing Monte Carlo models of ionizing radiation-emitting devices (such as cabinet X-ray machines and medical imaging devices) to model biological samples to help improve biological dosimetry methods.
  • Building upon the internal capacity and framework for performing risk assessments on radiation-emitting devices to inform risk management

Roles and responsibilities

Debora Quayle is a research manager with the Radiation Protection Bureau at Health Canada. Her team includes the National Radon Program, the National Internal Radiation Assessment Program and Canada’s National Dose Registry. She also oversees the development of federal recommendations for existing and emergency exposure situations in Canada, provides radiation health protection advice to address public concerns, and manages a small research program to support radiation risk assessment. Ms. Quayle is co-chair of Theme Area 1 of the Federal Nuclear Science and Technology Work Plan – Supporting the development of biological applications and understanding the implications of radiation on living things. She is a member of the COHERE Scientific Committee.

Dr. Sadi is a research scientist with the Radiation Protection Bureau at Health Canada. With COHERE, Dr. Sadi conducts research on dosimetry and cellular toxicity in order to better understand biological and health effects from internal contamination of radionuclides at the levels relevant to environmental exposure.
