The CNSC and CSA Group

Working together for a safe nuclear industry

CSA Group (formerly the Canadian Standards Association) is a standards development organization accredited both in Canada and the United States.

It is accredited in Canada by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC), and in the U.S. by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). CSA Group also actively participates in the development and harmonization of international standards, working with groups such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

Nuclear standards

Since the late 1970s, CSA Group has been developing and maintaining a comprehensive range of nuclear standards, supported by volunteer experts drawn from industry, public interest groups and government stakeholders, including the CNSC.

These experts participate in CSA Group committees to develop standards that meet various government policy objectives, as well as industry and regulatory needs.

Nuclear standards address a broad spectrum of topics that include:

  • environmental protection
  • waste
  • decommissioning
  • management systems
  • pressure boundaries
  • periodic inspections
  • safety systems and analysis
  • electrical safety
  • structures
  • seismic qualification

The CNSC’s regulatory framework references CSA Group nuclear standards. These standards provide information on best practices and complement CNSC regulatory documents.

Public access

The CNSC supports free public access to all published CSA Group nuclear standards, available through the CSA Communities portal.
