Ask an Expert : Fukushima-related health question 2 - HTML5 Transcript/Captions

Radiation protection measures are designed to ensure the most sensitive individuals, including children and infants, are effectively protected. Due to their smaller bodies, and faster breathing rates, a child's dose will be higher than an adult's for the same radiation exposure. Children are also more sensitive to the development of certain types of cancer and other negative health effects. Because children are generally more vulnerable, radiation protection measures, such as dose limits, make sure they are protected during regular nuclear power plant operations and also in the event of an emergency.
