Current status: Decommissioned nuclear facility and operating nuclear waste management facility
The Gentilly-2 Facilities are on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River in Bécancour, Quebec, around 15 km east of the city of Trois-Rivières. The facilities are owned and operated by Hydro-Québec.
The Gentilly-2 CANDU reactor was permanently shut down on December 28, 2012, and was completely defuelled by September 3, 2013. The reactor was transferred to a safe storage state in December 2014.
Hydro-Québec also operates a nuclear waste management facility through a waste facility operating licence. Low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste is stored at Gentilly-2. All used fuel is stored in CANSTOR modules (dry storage).

Health and safety
The CNSC oversees licensee emergency planning and works with other levels of government to ensure the health and safety of all people in Canada. The CNSC also conducts and reviews various health studies related to the production, possession or use of nuclear substances.
