Peace River Nuclear Power Project
Current status: Proposed nuclear facility
Energy Alberta is seeking a licence to prepare a site for its Peace River Nuclear Power Project near Peace River, Alberta. The nuclear generating capacity is up to 4,800 megawatts electrical (MWe).
This project is subject to a federal impact assessment and is undergoing the integrated impact assessment process.

About the planning phase
Formal engagement activities with the public and Indigenous Peoples begin in the planning phase. All documents associated with this phase are available on the Canadian Impact Assessment Registry and available for comment.
The role of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) in the planning phase is conducted in collaboration with the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada, and includes:
- develop tailored impact statement guidelines that emerge through the review of the initial project description
- develop a cooperation plan, a permitting plan, an Indigenous engagement and partnership plan, and a public participation plan
Engagement
The CNSC recognizes the importance of engaging and building relationships with the public living near existing or proposed nuclear facilities and with other interested parties.
Public information and disclosure program
CNSC regulations ensure that licensees communicate information effectively about activities at licensed facilities that are of interest to the public.
