Order issued to Cameco Corporation’s Rabbit Lake Operation

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) issued an inspector’s order on October 26, 2023 to Cameco Corporation’s Rabbit Lake Operation in northern Saskatchewan. The order was issued to the licensee for failing to ensure that emergency response teams’ personal protective equipment was maintained in an appropriate state of readiness. Cameco Corporation holds a CNSC licence for the mining and milling of uranium, although the facility has been in a state of care and maintenance since 2016.

The order was issued during a compliance inspection focused on emergency management and fire response, which was conducted from October 24 to 26, 2023. This order will remain in effect until all of the required information and actions have been provided and completed, and the CNSC is satisfied that Cameco Corporation can operate in accordance with its emergency preparedness and response program.
