Order issued to Best Theratronics Ltd.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) issued an order on November 6, 2024, to Best Theratronics Ltd. Best Theratronics is located in Ottawa, Ontario, and holds a Class IB nuclear substance processing facility operating licence.
The order was issued when it was found that Best Theratronics was no longer in compliance with its licence condition regarding a financial guarantee for decommissioning. The order requires the licensee not to operate under its Class IB licence until a financial guarantee acceptable to the Commission is established and an acceptable plan to restart operations is provided.

The Commission has reviewed the order issued to Best Theratronics Ltd., as required under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act (NSCA). The Commission considered the information in the order, as well as submissions by the designated officer and the licensee.
Pursuant to subsection 37(6) of the NSCA, the Commission has amended the order to clarify the requirements for the financial guarantee. The amended order will be in place until the licensee complies with the actions in the amended order.

The Commission has redetermined its amendment of the order issued to Best Theratronics Ltd. Best Theratronics must reduce its onsite inventory of CNSC-regulated material in accordance with CNSC regulatory requirements. This inventory reduction is subject to specific timelines.
Additionally, Best Theratronics is required to submit a preliminary decommissioning plan that accounts for the reduction of sources in inventory and must establish a financial guarantee acceptable to the Commission, in accordance with the timelines specified in the amended Designated Order.
