The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) organizational structure includes its executive team and branches that support the regulation of nuclear energy and materials in Canada.

The CNSC reports to Parliament through the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources.

Executive team

The CNSC executive team is led by the President and Chief Executive Officer and includes the heads of the organization’s branches.

Branches

The CNSC carries out its work through 5 branches.

  • Regulatory Operations Branch: Regulates nuclear facilities and activities in Canada.
  • Technical Support Branch: Provides scientific and technical expertise to support regulation and decision making.
  • Regulatory Affairs Branch: Leads strategic communications, regulatory policy and strategic planning.
  • Corporate Services Branch: Supports finance, human resources, information management, information technology and administration.
  • Legal and Commission Affairs Branch: Provides legal services and supports Commission business and registry functions.

The Commission

The Commission is an independent tribunal separate from the CNSC executive team. It makes regulatory decisions and consists of up to 7 permanent members. Biographies are available on the Commission members page.
