Mandate
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials in Canada. Our mandate, vision, mission and values reflect a commitment to nuclear safety, transparency and public trust.
Authority under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act
The Nuclear Safety and Control Act (NSCA) sets out the CNSC’s mandate, responsibilities, and powers. The NSCA provides the CNSC with the authority to regulate nuclear energy and materials in Canada.

Mission
Dedicated to protecting the health, safety and security of all people in Canada and its environment through independent, transparent and efficient regulatory oversight of Canada’s nuclear sector.
This includes:
- implementing Canada’s international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy in collaboration with domestic and international partners
- disseminating objective scientific, technical and regulatory information
- strengthening confidence through open communication and engagement to build and foster trusted relationships with Indigenous Nations and other communities in Canada and globally
Values
At the CNSC, we are committed to the values of respect, integrity, service, excellence, responsibility and safety. These values are reflected in our Values and Ethics Code, which guides all activities undertaken to fulfill our mandate as a regulator.
