Professional biography
Jean-Claude (JC) Poirier worked at the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) from 1996 until his retirement in 2022. He continues to support the CNSC through the CNSC Alumni Program, sharing his regulatory experience and contributing to training, inspection and enforcement-related work.
Expertise and education
His background includes nuclear medicine, radiation protection, compliance and enforcement. JC began his career as a certified nuclear medicine technologist and radiation safety officer. He later studied at the Université René Descartes in Paris, where he earned French certification in radiation protection for nuclear medicine, oncology and dental applications.
Roles and responsibilities
During his CNSC career, JC held several roles, including licensing specialist, inspector site coordinator and senior project officer in the Operations Secretariat. His work helped strengthen inspection practices, enforcement processes and regulatory oversight. He contributed to the development and management of the administrative monetary penalties program, the Conduct of Inspection corporate process, the CNSC’s enforcement strategy, the Investigation Handbook and related inspector training tools.
Other highlights
Through the CNSC Alumni Program, JC continues to share his experience with the organization and with international partners. He has supported International Atomic Energy Agency work related to training and regulatory capacity building. Outside his CNSC work, he is active in the community through cultural association leadership, youth soccer coaching, music and endurance sports.
