2010 Annual Report on Uranium Management Activities

The 2010 Annual Report on Uranium Management Activities (PDF) is the fourth joint report released by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and Environment Canada (EC). It documents uranium effluent releases from uranium mines and mills and other CNSC regulated facilities, and reviews management practices related to uranium in effluent within other sectors of the nuclear industry.

All the terms of the 2004 Annex to the Memorandum of Understanding between the CNSC and EC have now been fulfilled, so the 2010 annual report is the final joint report. Going forward, uranium management information will be presented in CNSC annual reports for uranium mines and mills.

Highlights of the 2010 report include the following:

  • As in past years, the uranium mining sector was the best performing mining sector relative to the Metal Mining Effluent Regulations effluent limits, with no exceedances in 2010.
  • Uranium in effluent from CNSC licensed facilities did not result in significant risk to the environment in 2010.
  • All facilities achieved the CNSC's objective of 0.1 mg/L for their annual average concentration of uranium in effluent.
  • Uranium releases in treated effluent from uranium processing and conversion facilities continued to be very low.

On February 22, 2012, the CNSC released a discussion paper for public consultation proposing to implement a consistent process for establishing release limits and action levels for nuclear and hazardous substances at CNSC regulated facilities. The results for this consultation process will be posted on the CNSC Web site following the close of the consultation period in June 2012.
