NOV 13 - Remarks by President Velshi at the International Framework for Nuclear Energy Cooperation's Global Ministerial Conference

On Wednesday, November 13, 2019, Rumina Velshi, CNSC President and CEO, spoke at the International Framework for Nuclear Energy Cooperation's Global Ministerial Conference in Washington, D.C. In her remarks, President Velshi conveyed how, as regulators, we enable the potential international harmonization of regulations for the evaluation and licensing of reactor designs.

OCT 28 - Remarks by President Velshi at the International Conference on Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness

On Monday, October 28, 2019, Rumina Velshi, CNSC President and CEO, spoke at the 2019 International Conference on Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness in Ottawa, Ontario. In her opening remarks, President Velshi focused on the role of innovation in research, technology and practices in fire safety and emergency preparedness in the nuclear sector.

OCT 17 - Presentation by President Velshi to the Bruce Power Board of Directors

On October 17, 2019, CNSC President Rumina Velshi gave a presentation to Bruce Power’s Board of Directors in Kincardine, Ontario. President Velshi provided an overview of the CNSC’s priorities and discussed the status of Bruce Power-related nuclear regulatory activities, as well as emergency preparedness and regulatory readiness for innovation. She also stressed the importance of building the trust of Canadians in the regulator’s decision making related to nuclear projects, and of including them by reflecting their views and values in those decisions. MAY 9 - Remarks by President Velshi at Innovation Showcase

On May 9, 2019, Rumina Velshi, CNSC President and CEO, spoke at Innovation Showcase. This event is a forum for international peers to exchange information on the latest innovations in nuclear asset management and industrial informatics. Ms. Velshi talked about the CNSC’s work to ensure that the organization is prepared to regulate innovation in Canada’s nuclear industry.

APR 26 - Presentation by President Rumina Velshi to TRIUMF’s Board of Management

On Friday, April 26, 2019, Rumina Velshi, CNSC President and CEO, delivered a presentation to the board of management of TRIUMF in Vancouver, BC. Ms. Velshi provided an overview of the CNSC, with a focus on innovation, safety culture and strengthening of public trust.

MAR 13 - Keynote remarks by President Velshi at the U.S. NRC’s Federal Women’s Program Advisory Committee (FWPAC) Women’s History Month luncheon

On Wednesday, March 13, 2019, CNSC President Rumina Velshi delivered a keynote address to the U.S. NRC’s FWPAC in honour of Women’s History Month in the United States.

Ms. Velshi discussed how building diverse and inclusive organizations improves working conditions for everyone, and what we can do as individuals to work toward gender balance in our day-to-day lives.

MAR 13 - Remarks by President Rumina Velshi at the Regulatory Information Conference

On March 13, 2019, President Velshi participated in a technical panel discussion entitled “Independence Without Isolation: International Perspectives on How Regulators Maintain Independence While Engaging Other Government and Industry Stakeholders.” In her remarks, Ms. Velshi discussed effective governance and robust regulatory safety oversight culture; engagement and mindful collaboration; and transparency and accountability in our regulatory process.

On Saturday, March 9, 2019, CNSC President and CEO Rumina Velshi participated in an International Women’s Day panel discussion entitled “Civil Society Champions: Living the Social Conscience of Islam” at the Ismaili Centre in Toronto.

In her opening remarks, Ms. Velshi talked about how leadership from the top is a prerequisite to achieving gender balance.

Ms. Velshi’s remarks touched on her own personal stories about working in the nuclear sector and how individuals can contribute to working toward gender balance.

On March 4, 2019, Rumina Velshi, CNSC President and CEO, shared her direction and vision for the CNSC and for the regulation of radioactive waste and decommissioning activities in Canada at a plenary session at the Waste Management Symposium in Phoenix, Arizona. She highlighted the importance of international collaboration, experience sharing and innovation to ensure that long-term solutions are safe and economically feasible.

On Wednesday, February 27, 2019, Rumina Velshi, CNSC President and CEO, delivered a presentation to members of the Canadian Association of Nuclear Host Communities at their annual general meeting. The presentation provided an overview of the safe storage of nuclear waste and on the CNSC’s Participant Funding Program.

In her remarks, titled “Balance for Better in the Energy Sector”, Ms. Velshi spoke about how everyone can work toward gender balance in the workplace and in our day-to-day lives.

On Tuesday, February 19, 2019, Rumina Velshi, CNSC President and CEO, was invited to appear before the House of Common’s Standing Committee on Natural Resources which is currently studying international best practices for engaging with Indigenous communities regarding major energy projects.

On Thursday, February 7, 2019, Rumina Velshi, CNSC President and CEO, appeared before the Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources to present on and respond to questions related to the government’s ongoing study of Bill C-69, An Act to enact the Impact Assessment Act and the Canadian Energy Regulator Act, to amend the Navigation Protection Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts."

JUN 4 - Presentation by Ramzi Jammal to UN Special Rapporteur on Hazardous Substances and Wastes

On June 4, 2019, Ramzi Jammal, CNSC Executive Vice-President and Chief Regulatory Operations Officer, delivered a presentation in Ottawa to Mr. Baskut Tuncak, a United Nations Special Rapporteur on Hazardous Substances and Wastes. The presentation offered an overview of Canada’s nuclear safety requirements, the CNSC’s regulatory framework related to waste, and the CNSC’s approach to Indigenous engagement.

APR 3 - Presentation by Ramzi Jammal at the International SMR and Advanced Reactor Summit

On April 3, 2019, the CNSC’s Executive Vice-President and Chief Regulatory Operations Officer, Ramzi Jammal, was a session chair at the International SMR and Advanced Reactor Summit in Atlanta, Georgia. His presentation focused on the pre-licensing vendor design review process, and the CNSC’s regulatory framework for advanced reactors.

MAR 13 - Presentation by Ramzi Jammal at the Regulatory Information Conference

On March 13, 2019, Ramzi Jammal, CNSC Executive Vice-President and Chief Regulatory Operations Officer, presented on the “Fuel Cycle Operating Experience in Canada” at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s 31st Annual Regulatory Information Conference in Bethesda, MD. In his presentation, Mr. Jammal discussed Canada’s commitment to improving transparency through better public reporting of lessons learned and events. He also spoke about the importance of sharing information and operating experience among industry and regulators as a key component to continuous improvement.

JAN 30 - Presentation by Ramzi Jammal to the Advanced Reactors Technical Summit VI & Technology Trailblazers Showcase

On January 30, 2019, Ramzi Jammal, CNSC Executive Vice-President and Chief Regulatory Operations Officer, gave a presentation to the Advanced Reactors Technical Summit VI & Technology Trailblazers Showcase at the University of California in San Diego. The presentation was titled "Advanced Reactor Projects in Canada: Regulatory Status and Perspectives".

Mr. Jammal’s presentation provided an overview of the CNSC’s regulatory approach to small modular reactors (SMRs), as well as the CNSC’s regulatory readiness and pre-licensing vendor design review process. In his presentation, Mr. Jammal also discussed how the CNSC and the Government of Canada are collaborating and sharing information on SMR technologies with a number of countries.
