The current transfer payment program that the CNSC administers is the Class Grants and Contributions Program. The Class Grants and Contributions Program was initiated in 1984 to enable research, development and management of activities, and is administered as part of the Research and Support Program.

Class Grants and Contribution Program
The CNSC’s Class Grants & Contributions Program is administered as part of the Research and Support Program. The Research and Support Program provides access to independent expert advice, experience and information through contracts, grants or contributions placed in the private sector and with other agencies and organizations in Canada and internationally.
All projects funded through the Grants and Contributions Program are for the purpose of generating knowledge and information to support CNSC staff in its regulatory mission. Currently, CNSC is responsible for identifying the projects and recipients and submitting the funding application for consideration and approval under the Research and Support Program.

Prior to April 1, 2010, the CNSC had two programs in its Transfer Payment Programs; Class Grants and Contributions and the Canadian Safeguards Support Program (CSSP) for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). As the authority for the IAEA contribution agreement expired on March 31, 2010, it was determined that the IAEA contribution agreement can be rolled-up under the current Transfer Payment authority for the Class Grants and Contribution Program and will follow the same evaluation timelines.
