CNSC allows Bruce A Unit 2 fuel reload
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced today its decision to release the first regulatory hold point for the Bruce A Units 1 & 2 refurbishment project. This will allow Bruce Power to begin to reload fuel into Unit 2 and continue with refurbishment activities.
As the Bruce A Units 1 and 2 refurbishment project nears completion, the units are being returned to service through a systematic process, which includes regulatory hold points. Bruce Power has requested the release of the fuel reload hold point for Unit 2.
In its decision following a 2009 operating licence renewal hearing, the Commission delegated authority to remove regulatory hold points to the Executive Vice-President and Chief Regulatory Operations Officer.
CNSC staff reviewed several submissions from Bruce Power and conducted numerous inspections at the facility to verify compliance with the Nuclear Safety and Control Act, applicable regulations and licence conditions. Based on the facts presented by CNSC staff and Bruce Power, the Executive Vice-President concluded that Bruce Power has met all of the prerequisites established by the Commission for fuel reload of Unit 2.
The return to service of Unit 2 will continue to be subject to review by CNSC staff. CNSC approval is still required to remove the shutdown guarantees and restart the reactor.
CNSC staff is satisfied that Bruce Power is qualified to reload fuel to Unit 2 and has made adequate provisions for the safety of the public, workers and the environment.
