What a Pre-Project Design Review Does and Does Not Do

The objective of a review is to verify, at a high level, the acceptability of a nuclear power plant design with respect to Canadian regulatory requirements and expectations. This includes identification of fundamental barriers to licensing a new design in Canada.

A review of a vendor’s nuclear power plant design assures that:

  • A vendor understands Canadian regulatory requirements and expectations
  • A design is compliant with Design of New Nuclear Power Plants (RD-337) document and related regulatory documents and standards.
  • A resolution path exists for any design issues identified in the review

A review will assure that technical considerations have been assesed and therefore does not include considerations such as:

  • Design costs
  • Completion of design
  • Scheduling factors relative to the review of a licence application
  • Capacity factors
  • Design changes that could be required as a result of future findings.
