What a Pre-Project Design Review Does and Does Not Do
The objective of a review is to verify, at a high level, the acceptability of a nuclear power plant design with respect to Canadian regulatory requirements and expectations. This includes identification of fundamental barriers to licensing a new design in Canada.
A review of a vendor’s nuclear power plant design assures that:
- A vendor understands Canadian regulatory requirements and expectations
- A design is compliant with Design of New Nuclear Power Plants (RD-337) document and related regulatory documents and standards.
- A resolution path exists for any design issues identified in the review
A review will assure that technical considerations have been assesed and therefore does not include considerations such as:
- Design costs
- Completion of design
- Scheduling factors relative to the review of a licence application
- Capacity factors
- Design changes that could be required as a result of future findings.
