Under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act and associated regulations, various levels of regulatory action can be taken by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) to protect the health, safety and security of Canadians and the environment.
On June 3, 2011, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) confirmed that Stewart, Weir & Co. Ltd. has complied with all the terms and conditions of the order issued to this Company on May 18, 2011. The corrective measures implemented by Stewart, Weir & Co. Ltd. were reviewed and found satisfactory by CNSC staff.
On May 25, 2011, the CNSC announced that it issued an order to Stewart, Weir & Co. Ltd of Sherwood Park, Alberta, a geotechnical and environmental materials consulting company. The order, issued May 18, 2011, is applicable to the Company's licensed activities conducted at the Kearl Oil Sands project, north of Fort McMurray, Alberta.
The order requires the company to cease the use of radiation devices licensed by the CNSC and to immediately put the equipment into secure storage. The company must be able to demonstrate it has established adequate management control over work practices, including control of occupational exposure to radiation and the implementation of an effective training and qualification program. The order was issued as a result of an inspection conducted at the Company's offices located at the Kearl Oil Sands project on May 18, 2011.
