Order to The Graff Company ULC

On September 16, 2011, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced that it issued an order to The Graff Company ULC.

The Graff Company ULC is based in Brampton, Ontario, and provides non-destructive testing services to various industries. The company holds a CNSC licence to possess and use nuclear substances contained in industrial radiography exposure devices for the purpose of materials testing.

The order was issued following a CNSC inspection on September 8 and 9, 2011. The inspection revealed that the company’s staff had insufficient knowledge and training to carry out its licensed activity safely, and that the company was not adhering to all of its regulatory obligations for the nuclear substances in its possession.  The order requires the company to keep all nuclear substances in storage until its employees have received appropriate training, an effective radiation protection program is in place, and all items of non-compliance identified during the inspection have been addressed to the CNSC’s satisfaction.

The current placement of the exposure devices in storage does not pose any immediate risk to the health and safety of workers, the public, or the environment
