March 9 - 11, 2010CNSC President Michael Binder will be presenting at the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s 22nd Annual Regulatory Information Conference in Bethesda, Maryland. The conference, entitled "Knowledge for Today and Tomorrow", will include sessions focused on: construction and licensing of new nuclear power plants; advanced reactor designs; security; safety research; domestic and international nuclear power plant operating experience and technical issues such as: digital instrumentation and control; fire protection; operator training; safety culture; and safe disposal of nuclear waste.
The Canadian Institute’s Nuclear Symposium

March 23 and 24, 2010The Canadian Institute will host a conference providing expert advice and analysis on issues facing the Canadian nuclear industry. Peter Elder, Director General of the CNSC’s Directorate of Nuclear Cycle and Facilities, will make a presentation on the Canadian nuclear landscape from the safety regulator’s perspective.

Conference on Waste Management, Decommissioning and Environmental Restoration for Canada’s Nuclear Activities 2011

September 11-14, 2011The Canadian Nuclear Society will host a conference discussing the status and proposed future directions of technical, regulatory, environmental, social, and economic aspects of radioactive waste management, nuclear facility decommissioning, and environmental restoration activities for Canadian nuclear facilities. This Congress is the 19th in a series of biennial meetings of the International Nuclear Law Association (INLA), created in 1972 to promote the study of legal issues associated with the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and to encourage the exchange of information in this field. It is now unquestionably the leading international conference for nuclear law specialists.
CNSC President Michael Binder made a presentation during the opening plenary session of the 19th biennial Nuclear Inter Jura Congress in Toronto, Ontario. President Binder spoke about the CNSC’s involvement in regulating Canada’s nuclear sector and elaborated on the CNSC’s key objectives to support the organization’s vision: to be the best nuclear regulator in the world.

October 8, 2009On October 8, 2009, President Binder gave the University of British Columbia weekly colloquium of the Physics and Astronomy Department, which are normally held every Thursday during the Spring and Fall semesters.
President Binder discussed nuclear power's role in a global context, nuclear power's role in Canada today, and the key challenges the CNSC faces in regulating the nuclear industry in Canada. Lastly, research in Canada and new technologies in the nuclear field were discussed in order to shed light on the role nuclear power could play in the coming century.

This event serves as a forum for raising awareness of the nuclear sector and encouraging discussion with respect to how people rely on nuclear material in their everyday lives, and the current global and local state of the industry in an environmental context.
