Participate in an EA

The Commission Tribunal relies on Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) personnel to conduct various forms of consultation activities during the Environmental Assessment (EA) process, and to report on the quality and depth of consultations undertaken by licence applicants.

Public participation is an essential element of the EA process, and CNSC’s approach for complex screenings often exceeds the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act’s consultation requirements.

The public can participate in many ways, including:

  • requesting public EA documents from CNSC by clicking on the project title of any specific ongoing EA listed and contacting the EA specialist listed at the bottom of the EA project Web page (contact information is also included at the bottom of this Web page)
  • emailing CNSC EA specialists at EA@cnsc-ccsn.gc.ca and asking to be placed on the mailing list for a specific EA or to be added to the list for EAs about similar project proposals in your area
  • sending your comments about an EA to CNSC by email at EA@cnsc-ccsn.gc.ca, by fax or by mail to the address indicated at the bottom of this Web page
  • attending a public Commission Tribunal hearing about an EA
  • attending a CNSC information session or workshop
  • checking your local newspaper or library bulletin boards for notices about local EA information sessions
  • attending a CNSC-led public consultation on draft EA Guidelines, results of technical studies or draft EA Report (screening or comprehensive study) – check ongoing EAs for notices of consultations
  • attending an applicant-led public consultation during the completion of technical studies, if applicable, by checking the potential licensee's Web sites for more information
  • visit the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency’s Web site where you may consult the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry and find other ways to get involved in an EA

Please note that these do not include consultations that would occur if the EA were to be referred to a review panel.
