CNSC protects the environment

Protecting the environment is an important part of our work at the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC).

On July 6, 2012, the new Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 came into effect, changing the requirements for low-risk environmental assessments (EAs). As a result, screening EAs are no longer required under the former CEA Act. However, environmental impacts and mitigation measures will continue to be considered under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act as part of the CNSC’s licence application review to ensure there is no unreasonable risk to the environment or human health and safety. 

EAs are used to predict the environmental effects of proposed initiatives before they are carried out. They provide opportunities for public participation in activities undertaken by potential licensees and/or CNSC, including Aboriginal consultations.
