Type:  Screening
CEAR reference number: 09-01-47427
Proponent: Canadian Light Source Incorporated (CLS)
Location: Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Project Description

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has received a project description from Canadian Light Source Incorporated (CLS) for an amendment to allow for the Phase III facility expansion to proceed in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.  The Project includes the following expansion activities:

  • A two-storey expansion of the front of the building required to accommodate future beamlines development, office and laboratory space; and
  • A two-storey expansion to the shipping and receiving area to handle materials, equipment, inventory and user demands.

CNSC authorization to perform the requested facility expansion requires an amendment to CLS’s Particle Accelerator Operating Licence, pursuant to subsection 24(2) of the Nuclear Safety and Control Act (NSCA).

Before the Commission may consider a decision on licensing under the NSCA regarding CLS’s proposal, a screening level environmental assessment (EA) must be completed in compliance with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.  The purpose of an EA is to identify the possible environmental effects of a proposed project, and determine whether these effects can be mitigated before the project is allowed to proceed.
