Project Description

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has received notice from Cameco Corporation of its intent to apply for authorization to construct a mining facility at the Cigar Lake site in northern Saskatchewan. The Cigar Lake site is licensed with a Site Preparation - Excavation Licence under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act. A joint federal/provincial environmental assessment panel review was completed for the Cigar Lake site in 1997 under the federal Environmental Assessment and Review Process Guidelines Order (EARPGO) and under Saskatchewan's Environmental Assessment Act and Public Enquiries Act.

Before the Commission makes its decision on Cameco's application to construct the Cigar Lake uranium mine, an environmental assessment will be completed in compliance with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.
