Project Description

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has received notice from the Low Level Radioactive Waste Management Office (LLRWMO) of its intent to apply for a licence to possess and monitor contaminated soil at its storage mound at Fort McMurray, Alberta. The storage mound was constructed in 1993-1995. Additional contaminated soil from the Waterways site near Fort McMurray was added to the storage mound in 2002.

Before CNSC makes its decision on the LLRWMO's application for a licence to possess and monitor the contaminated soil storage mound at Fort McMurray, an environmental assessment must be completed in compliance with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. The purpose of an environmental assessment is to identify the possible environmental effects of a proposed project, and to determine whether these effects can be mitigated before the project is allowed to proceed.
