Making decisions about the nuclear sector

The Commission Tribunal:

• makes independent, fair and transparent decisions on the licensing of nuclear-related activities
• establishes legally binding regulations
• sets regulatory policy direction on matters relating to health, safety, security and environmental issues affecting the Canadian nuclear sector.

Up to seven permanent appointed Commission members and one President/Chief Executive Officer

The Nuclear Safety and Control Act provides for the appointment of not more than seven permanent Commission members by Order in Council and of temporary members. One permanent member of the Commission is designated as the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission's (CNSC's) President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

CNSC hearings and meetings: your chance to participate and be heard

At public hearings, the Commission Tribunal makes decisions on the licensing of major nuclear facilities. At these hearings, interested parties and members of the public can be heard before the Commission.

At Commission meetings, members are briefed about significant developments that affect the nuclear regulatory process. At these meetings, members are also sometimes asked to make decisions on certain matters. The public is invited to observe, but does not participate.

Both hearings and meetings are open to the public.
