Directives

The Governor in Council may, by order, issue directives to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) of general application on broad policy matters with respect to the objectives of the CNSC.

In accordance with section 19 of the Nuclear Safety and Control Act (NSCA), the Government of Canada requested that, in regulating the production, possession and use of nuclear substances in order to prevent unreasonable risk to the health of persons, the CNSC consider the health of Canadians who, for medical purposes, depend on nuclear substances produced by nuclear reactors.

Cabinet Directive on Regulatory Management
The Cabinet Directive on Regulatory Management applies to all departments and agencies involved in the federal regulatory process. Government officials are responsible for abiding by the Directive at all stages of the regulatory lifecycle including development, implementation, evaluation and review.

International treaties

More…Nuclear Safeguards Agreements
The CNSC implements Canada's bilateral agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on nuclear safeguards verification to verify that nuclear material is not diverted from peaceful uses to nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices. The agreement gives the IAEA the right and obligation to monitor Canada's nuclear related activities.
