CNSC Deferred Laboratory Maintenance Project

The Deferred Laboratory Maintenance Project involves the renovation and refit of existing vacant laboratory space at the Natural Resources Canada Limebank Road site in Ottawa to accommodate the CNSC’s operational requirements.

The project, slated for completion by the end of 2010, is expected to provide numerous benefits to the CNSC, its licensees, and to Canadians as a whole. A modernized laboratory will substantially enhance the CNSC’s science and technology capacity in areas including radiation protection, environmental protection, safeguards and emergency preparedness. For example, the CNSC will be able to more quickly respond and more fully resume its independent verification of licensee environmental and radiation protection performance. It will also provide for a more rigorous radiation detection calibration program essential to the department’s inspection activities. Additionally, the renovated laboratory will allow the CNSC the ability to work with universities and other government labs to provide research and training opportunities for current and future Canadian scientists working in areas of nuclear safety and security.
